The honest baseline

A grid-tied rooftop array has no moving parts, no fluids and no consumables. It does not need annual servicing the way a boiler does. Most systems run for decades with no intervention beyond the occasional look at the numbers.

That is genuinely most of the answer. What follows is the small remainder — and the one habit that is worth more than all the rest combined.

Cleaning: usually optional, sometimes not

Dirt on glass costs output. How much depends almost entirely on where you live and how often it rains.

If you do clean: cool panels, soft water, no abrasives, no pressure washer, and ideally not you on the roof. Thermal shock from cold water on hot glass can crack a panel, and the fall is the bigger risk.

Snow, leaves and shade that arrives later

Snow stops production while it sits and usually slides off within a few days on a tilted array — see solar panels in winter. Clearing it by hand is rarely worth the risk or the marginal winter kilowatt-hours.

Trees are the maintenance item people forget. A branch that cleared the array on installation day will not clear it in eight years. Shade on even part of one panel can disproportionately reduce a string's output, depending on how the system is wired. Put tree trimming on the same mental list as gutter clearing.

The one thing worth doing: read the monitoring

This is the maintenance that matters, and it is the one most owners quietly stop doing after the first few months.

A failed microinverter, a tripped breaker, a communications dropout or a panel taken out by a hairline crack are all invisible from the ground. The array looks exactly the same. The only symptom is a number, and if nobody reads the number, a system can underproduce for a year before anyone notices — usually when an annual bill arrives higher than expected.
