What we do
SunSetup helps US homeowners work out whether solar makes sense for their house, and connects the ones it does make sense for with installers who serve their area.
The review is free and carries no obligation. You answer a short questionnaire, we look at your roof, your consumption and the incentives available at your address, and you get an estimate. If the numbers don't work, we say so — that outcome is more common than the industry's marketing suggests, and telling you is worth more to us than a sale you'd regret.
How we get paid
Installers pay us when we introduce them to a homeowner who has asked to be introduced. That is the entire business model, and it has two consequences you should know about:
- We earn nothing if you never speak to an installer. That is a real incentive to connect people, and you should read our content with that in mind — which is exactly why the editorial rules below exist.
- We do not sell your details into open lead markets. Your information goes to installers you have consented to hear from, and nowhere else. The Privacy Policy sets out what we collect and how to have it deleted.
How installers are vetted
Partners are required to:
- hold and maintain the licences, bonding and insurance required in every territory they serve;
- contact matched homeowners only about their solar project;
- honour opt-out requests immediately;
- never resell or redistribute homeowner details.
Partners who breach those terms are removed. If an installer we introduced you to behaves badly, tell us at info@sunsetup.com — we would rather lose the partner than the trust.
Editorial rules for our guides
Our guides are written under four standing rules:
- Say when solar is a bad ideaWrong roof, wrong tenure, cheap electricity, moving soon — these are covered as prominently as the upside, because leaving them out is how people end up with regret and a 20-year contract.
- Ranges, not fake precisionCosts and savings are given as ranges with the assumptions stated. A single confident number for a system nobody has surveyed is marketing, not information.
- Flag what movesIncentives and net metering rules change. Anything volatile is written to point you at the authoritative source rather than assert a figure that will go stale — and we re-check the guides rather than letting them quietly rot.
- Cite where to verify, including sources that aren’t usIRS guidance, your state utility commission, DSIRE, your own utility’s tariff. If a claim matters to your decision, you should be able to check it without taking our word for it.
Where a topic touches tax or finance, we say plainly that it is general information and point you to a qualified professional. We are not tax advisers, we are not engineers, and we are not the installer. Those distinctions matter.
What we are not
- Not an installer. We don't perform work, and we're not a party to any contract you sign with one.
- Not a lender. We don't originate finance or receive a cut of it.
- Not a tax adviser. Incentive eligibility depends on your circumstances and the law in force when your system is placed in service.
